Big Art raises big $$$ for The Big Issue

Michael-big-issue-vendor

Pictured above: Big Issue vendor Michael gives out the door prize donated by ecco restaurant.

We’re thrilled to announce that Big Art raised $17,500 through art sales on the night to support The Big Issue in Brisbane and its 60 vendors.  Thankyou to the 123 people who opened their hearts and wallets, to make the night a great success.

A special thanks to the 35 artists who donated artworks.  It was great to see so many of you there on the night!

The Big Art auction was opened by one of our most respected vendors, Michael Nist, who welcomed everyone on behalf of the Brisbane vendors.

The bidding was competitive all evening with David Hinchliffe’s Ferry on the Brisbane River sold at public auction for the highest amount of the night and the successful bidder and friends were snapped in the Courier Mail social pages.

Once again thankyou to everyone who helped out on Big Art and in particular Colour Chiefs Printing, City Framing and ecco restaurant.

Will we do it again next year?  Watch this space for details. To contact the Big Art coordinator email judy.johnson@ozemail.com.au

Big Art 2010 - online and preparing for a great event!

Big-issue-big-art
The Big Art auction was so successful in 2009 that it’s happening again this year to raise much-needed funds for The Big Issue — an independent current affairs and entertainment magazine sold on city streets by people experiencing long-term homelessness or unemployment.

There are more than 4,000 homeless people in Brisbane, with about 350 squatting in the CBD alone. The funds raised through Big Art help to support Brisbane’s 50 Big Issue vendors who are determined to help themselves.

The exhibition will be at the Bleeding Heart Gallery in Brisbane’s historic School of Arts Building, where the art will be auctioned at a ticketed event on 14 October 2010.

Some of the artists from 2009 are contributing again this year including high profile artist Regan Tamanui and Keith Burt, an emerging artist who was selected for judging at this years national Churchie Art prize.

Well-known Brisbane identities from the creative community — author Nick Earls, diva Kate Miller-Heidke and fashion designers Easton and Pearson are also donating to this years auction event.
